Education

We are committed to fostering diverse and supportive, life-long learning environments that enhance critical thinking, creativity, and humility.

Our psychiatry residency program is designed to train residents as clinicians who are well rounded in clinical work, scholarly research, and community service. Our program provides extraordinary opportunities for residents to learn in a culturally rich setting with an ethnically diverse population. In addition to our general psychiatry program, we have fellowship opportunities in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry.

CONNECTEDNESS

Our program has a relational worldview of well-being. We focus on connectedness among our residents, fellows, and department as a whole; connectedness to the community; and connectedness to place.

SYSTEMS

Our department is the largest provider of psychiatric services in Hawaiʻi. Our spectrum of services also extends into the community. In this role, our residents and fellows often care for the most vulnerable patients and populations in Hawaiʻi.

CULTURE

Our residents and fellows gain an in-depth ethnocultural understanding of patients and selected ethnic populations that they work with in Hawaiʻi's multicultural, multiethnic society, showing humility, respect, empathy, and compassion.

OPPORTUNITY

Psychiatry continues to be a shortage specialty in Hawaiʻi. More than half of our graduates remain in the islands, to work in the community or becoming faculty.

The Department of Psychiatry is committed to providing UH-JABSOM medical students with psychiatric education of the highest quality. We participate in medical student education at all levels, including: the basic problem-based learning units (during the first and second years), the clinical skills preceptorships (notably, the “brain and behavior” subunit), the third-year clerkship, and fourth-year electives.

We are committed to enhancing students’ learning of the biological, behavioral, populational, and clinical aspects of medicine; as we believe that embracing this comprehensive approach can lead to the best care for patients. We take pride in the fact that, among our graduating students, our recruitment rate into the specialty of psychiatry is around twice the national average (of 3 to 4%).
